The True Root Cause of Procrastination

Why do we delay things we do when we can finish them on time? When can we get to fulfill this dream project when we are caught scrolling to our friend's vacation pictures? Why are we procrastinating? What is the root cause of procrastination?

Procrastination is everyone's relatable story. However this culprit hits you, have you ever thought about where this comes from?  Putting things off intentionally is a lack of knowledge, according to my personal coach. But the real procrastination comes from self-doubt. These annoying thoughts of "we're not good enough", "we can't solve a problem" or "we can't solve a hurdle", are signs of self-doubt. It is a sign of procrastination.

How can we deal with this? That’s what I’ll be talking about in today’s episode of Raise To Rise!

Find the root of procrastination

There are three questions that I asked myself to find the root cause of the procrastination.

1. What is the trigger?

What is stopping me from starting? These are the things or thoughts that halt your action to initiate.

2. What trigger Am I experiencing? -

What are some things that are blocking me? What is holding me from doing what I want? Are there mental or physical things that hinders you from taking a step?

3. What can I do to overcome this trigger right now?

Take action! Veer away from being distracted and stop wasting time. Avoid letting our attention get lost on the wrong thing.

Procrastination is a phase of endless thinking. To take action, it has to be thinking and doing simultaneously.  Hence, creating a structure and a boundary is feasible, otherwise, it is directionless. With careful planning and prepping, execution should be undemanding and painless. To do this, I use a tool called ‘Pomodoro’.

Pomodoro Technique

Pomodoro is designating a part or fragment of time to finish a single task.  The chunk of time is called a pomodoro.

The Pomodoro technique is ideally working and focusing on each single task for a certain chunk of minutes. For instance,  25 minutes to finish writing and a 5 minutes break.  In effect, it brings out efficiency and productivity to your day. Would you believe that this saved me a lot of energy and some sanity?

The most important rule to realize this technique is to follow the order wisely.  The feeling of accomplishment is more than an achievement!

Let us keep things in check and steer clear of anything that delays us. Let's think and do!
