Who Am I? A Question So Simple, Yet So Profound - A Spiritual Journey To Finding Your True Self

Do you know your real self? Who are you? Who am I?

Embarking on a Spiritual Journey to Find my True Self

As many of you remember, I embarked on an eight day meditation retreat at the beginning of the month. It was all about knowing myself, finding out who I really am, besides my role as a friend, coach, employee, mother, daughter, and a wife. It’s not the role I played, but I asked myself... Who am I?

Society has dictated how we answer this question. Oftentimes, we answer depending on our role in the community. And as a result, we just play along with these roles and we forget who we truly are. As simple as this question may be, it also has a very deep meaning on a spiritual level.

This spiritual retreat was all about finding my true self. It’s not just about acquiring new information or knowledge, but it was about learning it and applying it in my daily living. Spirituality is not just a path we walk on, but we are spiritual beings with human experiences. So it’s all about living spiritually each day.

You Don’t Have a Soul, You are a Soul, You Have a Body

There’s a famous quote by C.S. Lewis, he said, ‘You don’t have a soul, you are a soul, you have a body.’ My entire retreat was based on this quote. It means I am not this body, rather I am the soul, and I have a body. It is similar to the Indian philosophy, Atma. Our body is the house of our soul. To better understand it, our soul has the intention, goal, or purpose, and we use our body to attain them. And what the spiritual teacher has taught us during the retreat was on how the body and soul unite to discover our inner person. If we reach that level of understanding, we would be able to answer our question of who we really are.

From One Soul to Another

From a soul level, we should look at everyone’s soul too. Not looking at someone’s negative qualities or external appearance. Those are all superficial at the end of the day. Instead, we should understand that everyone is divine, unique. We are all one, no differences. We should look at each other with respect, love, and divinity. If we treat each other this way, we will avoid misunderstandings and negativities. However, if a person believes that the body is a self, and we are not the soul, we are not divine, that’s when we develop this materialistic outlook. And the basis of our lifestyle becomes materialistic values. Pursuing fame, money, and social status.

Our Goal is to Live Spiritually

To live spiritually, and know ourselves from within should be our ultimate goal. To have that peace, knowing who we really are. If we come to terms with that, we would look at the world differently. We would have so much respect and love for each other, and the world will be a better place to live in, for us and for the generations to come.
